On this Tanzania trekking adventure safari, you will hike the great summit of Africa, the Kilimanjaro Mountain to the Uhuru peak on Kibo which is at a height of 5’890 meters above sea level. Kilimanjaro sits high in the clouds and therefore capped by snow. It rises gently from the open plains to set a glorious view towering in the milieu of northeastern Tanzania. It is the most popular mountaineering site across the Africa continent and therefore draws a number of hikers ever year.

Mountain Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano believed to have last erupted 1’000s of years back. It has 3 volcanic peaks that’s; Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira and its base covers about 64 Km. The mountain is one of Africa’s natural wonders and ranks among the top three and its also a UNESCO heritage site.

On this 8 day Kilimanjaro mountaineering safari, you will follow the footsteps of Ludwig Purtsceller and Hans Meyer, who were the first ascenders, to take on a challenge to the summit (Uhuru Peak) of this great African mountain. You will spend 7 days of hiking through the Machame route.

Note: Welcome to the Land of Adventure! You will be warmly received by the guide on arrival at Kilimanjaro International airport.  He will then transfer you to your overnight accommodation.

Package Itinerary

Start off the day very early with breakfast, then depart the hotel to the park reception area at Machame gate past the village of Machame situated on the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the journey time to the gate depends on the area/hotel of overnight.
After registration and a short briefing, you will start off today’s trek that will last nearly 6 hours from Machame gate at 1’790 meters, hiking through a patch of rainforest to Machame Camp at 3’010 meters just near a forest extension into the moorland zone. It is at the camp you will be for your overnight.

O/night: Camping in tent at Machame Camp. Meal Plan: Full Board (FB)

Today, start early with breakfast and ascend, from the Machame camp, through a zone of Moorland vegetation, a path moving eastwards in the direction of the peak for nearly 3-4 hours and then turns westwards for closely 1-2hours (about 200meters) to Shira Camp at 3’845 meters just near the Shira cave. It is here at Shira that you will camp for the rest of the day and your overnight as you warm up for the following day’s trek to Barranco. Optional, depending on how you may be feeling, you may choose to hike up to the Shira Crater where the lava flow of Kibo filled the Crater.

After breakfast, continue trekking to the great Kilimanjaro Mountain, the “Roof of Africa”. Today’s trek from Shira to Barranco will last about 7 hours, you will ascend gradually on a trail heading eastwards, and then descend shortly, reaching the Lava tower (referred to as Shark’s Tooth) at a height of 4’630 meters, then continue with the descent, steadily crossing through the high altitude desert reaching Barranco camp which is found at an elevation of 3’960 meters above sea level. It is here at the camp that you will rest for the remaining part of the day, have you dinner and overnight stay.

Today, we shall depart from Barranco camp after having breakfast, and today’s trail will take about 4 hours to Karanga through a high altitude desert. This path/ trail to Karanga, descends in a zig-zagging form southeastwards from the Barranco valley via its wall. On this trekking trail, you take in views of the beautiful glaciers of Kibo.

O/n: Karanga Camp. Meal Plan: Full Board (FB)

Leave Karanga camp after breakfast, ascend steadily in the northeastern direction with a gain in altitude of about 600meters today to Barafu camp. Trekking on this trail from Karanga to Barafu takes about 3-4 hours through a high altitude desert climatic region. From the valley at Karanga, you can see Barafu camp in the vicinity which gradually disappears as you approach it. The trail then connects to the Mweka route as you near the camp. It is at the camp you will spend the rest of the day and your overnight.

Note: On day 4-5, you have short treks to store some reasonable amounts of energy needed to take on the long trek from Barafu to the peak and back which takes nearly 13-15hours.

O/n: Barafu Camp. Meal Plan: Full Board (FB)

Today you will be woken up very early in the night (at or just after mid-night), have a hot drink and all dressed up in warm clothes to prepare for the arctic zone, you will leave Barafu camp trekking all the way past Gillman’s Stella at the crater rim on to the Uhuru peak. On the trek to the summit, prepare for quite a challenging moment across rocky ridges and scree region as well as a cold environment. The climb to the peak takes about 6-7 hours and at the summit, you are in for capturing the once in a life time moments at highest point in Africa at 5’895meters.

Afterwards, descend for about 4 hours back to Barafu camp where you have a lunch break, then continue with the descent nearly 3 hours to Millennium camp (3’820 meters) where you will camp for overnight.

O/n: Millennium Camp. Meal Plan: Full Board (FB)

Today after breakfast, we descend to Mweka gate at an elevation of 1’630 meters, which lasts about 6 hours to the gate. From the camp at Millennium, you will descend through an area of Alpine-moorland to Mweka camp/hut situated at an elevation of 3’080 meters, and just after like an hour from Mweka camp you enter a rainforest fringed zone all the way to the gate. At the gate is where you will meet your safari vehicle, after being given your Kilimanjaro mountaineering certificate, you will be transferred back to the hotel where you have dinner and overnight.

O/night: Pink Flamingo lodge (Luxury)/Kaliwa lodge(Mid-range). Meal Plan: Full Board (FB)

Have a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, and later in the day you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight back home.
